Reference photos

Good reference photos are essential for a high-quality portrait.

Please send your reference photo(s) by e-mail. I will be happy to help you choose the most suitable image if you have several options.

The most important requirement is that the photos are sharp and of good resolution.
The more detail visible in the reference photo, the more detail I can include in the drawing.

Ideally, the animal should be shown as large as possible (full frame) and photographed at eye level.

The eyes should be clearly visible (including colour and reflections), and there should be no distracting shadows on the face.

For natural colours, it is best to take photos in daylight outdoors. Please avoid using flash, as it can create unnatural colours and reflections.

Try to capture the animal’s character and personality whenever possible.

Of course, you may also send photos taken by a professional photographer.
In this case, please ensure that you have written permission from the photographer to use the image as a reference for a commissioned artwork.
