My name is Karin Kiessling. I was born in 1971 in Landau, in the south-west of Germany, where I still live today.
I studied pharmacy and worked in laboratories for 12 years, with a strong focus on natural sciences.
In 2007, I developed a chronic illness (ME/CFS), which changed my life completely and made it impossible for me to continue my previous work.
Some years later, as my health slowly improved, I was able to return to my long-standing passion for drawing and painting.
Living and working with these limitations has shaped the way I approach my art today, with a strong focus on patience, careful observation, and fine detail - qualities that are essential for capturing the character and presence of each animal.
I am a self-taught artist, learning through books and online resources. I began with watercolour, mainly painting flowers and animals, and discovered my preferred media—pastel and charcoal—in 2014.
As a lifelong lover of animals and nature, they have since become my main subjects, occasionally complemented by portraits of people.
My goal is not only to achieve a high level of realism, but also to capture the individuality and spirit of each animal I portray.
It is deeply rewarding for me to see the emotional connection people feel when they recognize their beloved animal in my work.
Over the years, I have continuously refined my technique through dedicated practice.
Due to my chronic illness, I am unfortunately not able to participate in exhibitions or other events.
Instead, I focus all my energy on creating my artwork.
I present my work primarily online, where I have been able to reach many people who have purchased my art or commissioned me to create personal portraits.
Since 2025, I have been a member of the Pastelguild of Europe and the German Pastel Society ("Pastellgesellschaft").
